В конкурсе Гравюра-2017 судья Игорь Агапов включил в присуждение половину из поступивших 24 этюдов (PDF).
Он отметил, что «призовые этюды не являются форсированными (это важно), отличаются наличием в содержании интересного сюжета, гармонией формы и отсутствием компьютерной аналитики в доказательных вариантах».
Судья явно выдает желаемое за действительное, когда пишет об отсутствии аналитики в первых двух призах. Мне понадобились часы возни с компьютером и таблицами Ломоносова, чтобы проверить и кое-где подправить доказательные варианты в этих этюдах. Утомительный анализ мешает раздать даже скромные комплименты авторам призовых этюдов. Композитор должен мучиться больше, чтобы решатель не страдал, а получал удовольствие от расчета вариантов.
Первый приз. Такие сюжеты с пассивной жертвой белого ферзя не раз встречались в творчестве Ю.Базлова. Это красивый и в то же время удобный прием для добавления вступления к эффектным финалам.
Второй приз. Красоты – один ход, аналитики – на год.
Третий приз. Претензий к оригинальности здесь нет, так как этюд Погосянца (см. этюд №46 здесь) дырявый даже в момент жертвы ферзя.
В почетных отзывах при проведении синтеза нескольких простых идей авторы не решили проблем с лишним материалом. Рокировка с разменом проходной на ладью – это детский сад.

About the study of Nielsen & Minski (Kg7/Ke6):
Remove the two pawns on a6 and b5 and you will see that the main idea 3.Rg5! … 4.Rd5! doesn’t work anymore. It works with the pawn on b5, but thanks to the pawn on a6 we have two moves as introduction without captures. I think it’s worth it.
About the study of Nielsen & Minski (Ke1/Kg1):
The pawn on d7 is important because without this pawn 8.Qxb5 is a draw. Why should he move? I see no reason.
About the study of Nielsen & Minski (Ke7/Kh8):
This is a symmetrical joke and not a logical study. Your idea to search a logical try is absurd in my view in this case.
Show me an improvement of one of these studies!

All great composers counted pawns. Pervakov counts pawns. Bazlov counts pawns. Ryabinin counts pawns. Young Gurgenidze counted pawns.
In synthesis if the first important idea needs additional pawns, they should leave the board before the second important idea. (I think, it is from the An.Kuznetsov book or article)
Haven’t you seen studies with two mates without superfluous material? Not in the scheme you used? But in similar schemes this was realized. So, you simply use bad schemes instead of seaching for better ones. Use a dustbin from time to time.
There are too many nice studies to enjoy. When you know these, you cannot enjoy badly-made studies. I don’t enjoy Arestov’s prize-winner because I know Bazlov’s studies and the Miljanic with similar ideas.

I think that you know that an exchange is bad in general.
Why do you compose like that?
In truth, it’s a very good logical study with a thematic try 2.Bxc6? and foresight concept. I gave for this study 3 points as candidate for the FIDE Album and this study is included with 9 points. The little weakness of an exchange is not important in this study.
But again: I think that in general an exchange is even worse that an added pawn.
Your study with Tarasiuk is maybe not possible without this bad exchange on f3 (and on f1). Nevertheless, the idea of the study is more important than small technical weaknesses. The study is worth to exist.
The ideas of the first two study coproductions with Nielsen in Gravure 2017 are possible only with an added black pawn.
Exchange is bad, extra material is crime.
Here’s the key postion in our study reached after exchanges of pieces:
Black cannot play Kc6 because White spared bPc6.
Let’s suppose there is another study with the same idea and additional pawns but without exchanges on the previous moves.
This is a bad study. A good composer wouldn’t even start working at such schemes with extra pawns.

I know studies with 2 model mates without extra material. So, such studies are possible without extra pawns. The little tricks with R-sacrifice don’t compensate for lack of economy.
I usually write about prize-studies. Your studies didn’t impress me and you know why )) You’re lucky Pervakov doesn’t write about your studies. They make him too nervous because of the pawns. He’s ashamed when such cheap studies are placed near his deep masterpieces.

Ok. I have to say that you’re right. Our second honourable mention is worse than steffen’s study from ChessStar 2017 with about the same content. It is even anticipated by this study.
I remain with my opinion about the third honourable mention in Gravure: The pawn on d7 is necessary.
By the way, I agree absolutely with hm or commendation for our three coproductions. I critizise only the comment of the judge about this studies.
The commentator didn’t say «scheize», though it’s the right word to describe this study. Huge slap of bad publicity to the study art.

Белые превратили 3 пешки в коней, затем с муками и тошнотворными аналитическими вариантами пригнали короля на d7 для финальной кавалерийской атаки. Уже достаточно плохо, но что там валяется на g5 и g7? Это чёрные ошмётки, оставшиеся от предыдущей игры и никому теперь не нужные.
Теперь заключительная часть последовательного синтеза слабых превращений: 11.b8К+! Крc7 12.Кa6+ Крb6 13.a8К+!+-
Попрание фанатично декларируемых автором принципов.
Вы, вообще, не понимаете, что такое лишние пешки или придуриваетесь? Замысел состоит в последовательном превращении пешек в 5 коней. Для этого нужны все пешки.
Какая аналитика? Вы даже не успеете запустить движок, как компьютер высветит перевес больше +10.
