Congratulations to Arpad! I like your asymmetry studies.
Our 2nd prize is overrated. Steffen’s 3rd prize is more original.
Oleg, again: I think the Minski & Bruch study does not deserve a prize.
But that’s a judge’s thing, not my problem.
No problem, Martin! But see my next post – about study of Arpad. Where you see the study? Please show me the real study after 1-st White move.
I wrote a book about asymmetry. I would be lying if I did not like these studies. Whether such a study deserves a first prize is certainly worthy of discussion. Please ask the composer for details.
Oleg, I also don’t see it. 😀
But that usually happens with a study if you cut out the main idea.
BTW, I know that the play after the first move is dry. I was lucky: it could have been even worse.
Thanks, Martin. 🙂
Arpad, that is my main issue with these assymetry studies. If assymetry is the main idea, than one may even argue that it is anticipated? 🙂 But if you manage to add extra ideas (like it seems to me you did better in at least one of your other assymetry studies), then assymetry is certainly an enhancing factor.
Steffen, so all studies ending in a checkmate are anticipated?
This study has enough originality. It has an extra idea which is an important one for the practical player: where to put the rooks and the kings in a rook ending. A rook is better placed behind the passed pawn than in front of it (manoeuvre Rd8-a8-a4-d1). The king is better on the shorter flank and this paradoxically overwrites the necessity to put the rook on the longer flank (1. Rh8?, 1. Ra8!!). After 1.Ra8! the c2R is “pinned” (1… Rc3? 2. Ra2+ =), so black moves the other rook up (1… Re3) but that blocks the e3 square for the black king, leaving free only the c3 square (Kc3) when it needs to attack the white rook.
Here’s a more detailed analysis: https://ruszchessstudies.blogspot.com/2019/03/study-161.html
I like the two quasi-symmetrical positions marked with Position X and X’.
I don’t seriously think it is anticipated, of course. But you called asymmetry the main idea. Or a least that was how I read your remark.
I appreciate that fact that the rook goes to the short flank. This is indeed noticeable.
The logical idea of asymmetry goes from move 1 till move 10. At the end we have positions X and X1 (bR can play Rh4 in the try, and cannot play the analogous move in the solution). Of course, it’s the main idea. But the clarity of lines is bad. It’s not so obvious at all why one position is lost and a very similar one is drawn. This spoils everything.
Yes, after move 8 in the thematic try, black can use the extra h-file not only for the rook but also for the king for escaping the perpetual checks. So white should not allow the play to go to the longer flank.
