Springaren 2018

The first prize leaves me with questions. I am guessing the initial idea was the 11. Nf6+ trick presented in the first main line. So:

1. Why was the line ending with 14. Nb2 given priority in the presentation? Because it is the longest? The line ending in 12. Rf7# is clearly the most interesting.

2. Why would you split this study into four mainlines at all instead of just one main line with three sidelines? The main justification of presenting several mainlines it thematic unity between the lines. Here there is none. I guess there may be cases where two exciting (non related) lines are of equal value (like Djurasevic’ 2nd prize EG 2016-17). But random lines ending with mate are not mainlines. They remind me of the computer suggestions, that we all experience as composers, and which we need to discard from the real deal, our central idea.

3. This brings me to my next question, not directed to the composers, but to the judge. What is complex structure? Is it something to be desired? Is a clear storyline not to be preferred? There are movies and novels with complex structures, but in those the various elements of the structure refer to each other through out like is the case in the best logical studies. Here there is no communication among the four lines, no similarities. It is more like four animals on seperate rafts, drifting to the four corners of the world and blessed oblivion.

PS. My own study had serious anticipations. I am happy with it’s place in the award.

The study by Hlinka and Kekely really made me smile. How can such a simple and beautiful finish have escaped composers for so long? Rook and 1 pawn vs Rook and 1 pawn…

I also like 1.h.m. by Hlinka and Kekely. Lovely study in classical style! I congratulate authors for this study.

Now finally I understand everything:
“Mario G. Garcia” is a pseudonym for Nadja Cipriani!

I think Avni’s study is the best of the tournament.

For all the rule of Steffen Slumstrup Nielsen,
which I support in principle (there are always exceptions):
In the introduction,
there should be no pieces that are stronger than the pieces
that later show the main idea.

That’s why the queen in the 3rd prize is too heavy.

What do you think about this rule?

Sergiy, your opinion was clear,
otherwise you would have praised this study.
Judging of Avni’s study in the WCCI:

Van der Heijden: 3
Gyarmati: 3
Minski: 3
Nielsen: 2
Rusz: 2

=8 points
Therefore included in the next FIDE Album.

The first prize does not impress me at all.
The second prize has very surprising moves and a tactically
good introduction.
You’re throwing both together.
Why?

It’s true that Qg8!! works more economical, but then is there a good introduction?

I am not ashamed.

The study belongs in the Album.

Indeed, Vladislav. I had something similar on my board this afternoon. Two pawns spared. But more importantly. We are spared the confusing introduction of the original.

M.Hlinka & L.Kekely.
