Судья: A.Avni 1 приз.
Два мощных этюда с крепостью Карштедта можно найти в книге «The Art of the Endgame» с.192-195.
Just saw the results of UAPA-13 on the Arves site. Quick impressions:
Theme (Q/R(R)):
1st prize, Krug and Arestov, shows an instructive manoeuvre—the king is lifted to g6 such that the fortress cannot be built after Qe4xb1. But is this enough for a first prize?
I liked the flow of the play in the 2nd prize (Bazlov) and the mix of vertical and horizonal skewers better. On the downside, there is no real final pointe.
1st hm (Croitor) is cute, but the mechanism looks familiar to me. But perhaps I am wrong.
Win Studies:
1st prize, Krug and Arestov. Does not look special to me. At least I would not give two exclamation marks for Se5/Sc5.
2nd prize, Timman, may be instructive for practitioners like me, but I think the logical content is not significant enough for a prize.
“Specpriz”, Didukh. The judge describes the problem of judging this study well. However, I have a more classical taste than him.
Draw Studies:
1st prize, Pasman. Looking forward to the polemic between the author and Sergiy. The introduction is way too heavy for the rook endgame. Also, it is full of exclamation marks, but I don’t see why. One of the numerous exclamation marks should be transferred from there to 7. Kb7!!: this is the most interesting, surprising and logically significant move of the study. The following play is also interesting (14. f7!, 15. Rb6!). The final positional draw is less appealing than in the famous Kasparyan studies and 17. Rb4 is definitely not !!, but still 17. Rb8 is a reasonable try. A good study, unfortunately with a weak beginning.
The construction of the mate and stalemate ideas in the 2nd prize (Timman) and 3rd prize (Arestov and Kiryakov) is just not my cup of tea. Timman looks artificial and not very economic too me. For the 3rd prize, I find the play of the single queen against the pieces less inspiring than the other way round.
Overall, the thematic studies tend to be more interesting than the rest. I also like the first prize in the draw section, but it has clear constructional weaknesses.
Jan, about my 1-st prize study .
Thank you for your notes, I agree with what you said about the rook endgame, that you like for example 7.Kb7! move and the try 7.Kb6 Ra8!! .
But I do not agree with you about the introduction.
I think that if composer has some interesting and instructive endgame, he need not
to be punished on that and he also can add some nice introduction if it exists.
And if somebody wants to publish this endgame in rook endgames book , he can do that
starting from move 6. There are some book authors which constantly publish the studies
from point they choose according to type of the readers and it is absolutely ok, in my opinion.
I like the introduction (and I am far not to be the only one). I think it adds nice sacrifices, showing that white makes a lot of effort to keep his passed f6 pawn, and, for example the idea 1.Bc4!! is to defend indirectly his f6 pawn in cost of bishop. While on the other hand, on move 14 white just sacrifices this f-pawn to achieve fortress and force positional draw.
Also other moves , like 3.Rg8+! is the continuation of a plan and black’s answer 4…Kh5! looks very nice.
I think all this makes the study more interesting.
Sorry, Michael, I was not very precise in my comments and I see what confused you.
I think the play in your introduction is interesting and technically fine. I believe that many people like it. But: it does not fit the theme of your study. It introduces motives which are completely extraneous.
Your study is about a fight of rook and two pawns against rook and two pawns, beginning with 5. …b3!. It shows logic (7. Kb7 vs. 7. Kb6) and technical content, ie, how to use the f-pawn to reach a theoretically drawn position with R against Rpp.
For this kind of study the sparkling introduction is misplaced. I think it can better be used for introducing a tactical study. In my music analogies: you are composing a string quartet (the rook ending) end let it precede by a fanfare for a brass band (the introduction). I think that less is more in this case.
Nielsen has, in the award to his JT-45, also written about the principle of not using stronger pieces in the introduction than those which are essential to the scheme. You find it on arves.org.
In general terms, studies should have a coherent theme from beginning to end. You may try to compose a lighter introduction: I would be interested in seeing it.
Yes , I know about what Nielsen wrote. And may be there are cases that introduction is not necessary. But not in this case. In introduction there is also struggle against strong f-pawn. And this is not only my opinion, this is also opinion of some very experienced and great composers. May be there should be some other composers that will think that it is not needed (as I said, I not agree with them). But in any case it can’t downgrade the study and in worst case not to add points to it.
I would not be unhappy about being stuck at Arestov’s level! Although his style is not my preferred one, I appreciate the Scarlattian transparency of his studies.
Jokes aside, I see the dilemma about your study, Sergiy. I am now, while at work, listening to my preferred classical music program on the radio. They played Dvorak, the symphonic poem “Holoubek”, and now Schumann, Abegg-Variations for piano. Imagine they play Jimi Hendrix next! How would the listeners react? How would I react? I agree that your study is fascinating, but comparing it to normal studies is as difficult as comparing Keith Jarrett to Emil Gilels, or Jimi Hendrix to Andrés Segovia. It is just a different ballpark.
What you are proposing to Petr is that study composition should develop into a different direction and that we should forget taboos on number of pieces, economy etc. and open up our mind to the content. Fair enough! Go on like this and let’s see where this gets us! You are a great composer and I think you will get interesting results when you transgress borders. Personally, I won’t get excited neither about this style nor about Jimi Hendrix. Even Oleg’s WCCI masterpieces are often too heavy for me. But this is irrelevant, of course, and perhaps Petr, Avni and me will change their mind in the end.
Curiosity question: is this the study you submitted to the World Cup 2020?
Chess is narrower than music. In chess a style doesn’t make the idea irrecognizable, it is just expressed in a different way. So, no need to learn various techniques and meanings behind millions of sounds and instruments in order to grasp the idea. If so, the ability of a study judge to compare and evaluate objectively compositions of different styles, sizes or stipulations depends on his knowledge of studies with similar ideas. When a judge can’t tell a bad study from a good one it’s not because of his preferences.
Number of pieces and economy are different things. There’s no taboo on the number of pieces in a study. But the principle of economy should always be respected. It is in my big study but the miniature by Arestov and Kiryakov breaks the principle of economy because the pawn a2 is not needed. Surprised?
Yeah, my study participated in the World Cup and Pervakov JT but the judges were too old-view-school to like it.
Thank you, too, for your explanations on Timman’s study. I have to admit that I did not grasp the full logical content when playing it through fast. (Timman should have given the Probespiel 1. Bd5 to help the reader.) I agree that the structure of the study is flawless: foreplan to remove the obstacle, creating a new obstacle on the way, then another logical Grundplan/Mehrplan decision to discard the new obstacle, finally implementation of the original plan. Which consists itself of a foreplan (Bd5) and the main plan (Sf3 and Sg5).
In theory, a great study, perhaps a masterpiece. The economy is also satisfactory. But when I see the black king on f8 strangled by the white pawns, I cannot help the impression that this looks more like a mate problem camouflaging as a draw study. It is carnival season, of course, and this may well win the prize for the best costume! But it remains a costume.
(Notwithstanding my classical taste, you have convinced me that this study is more significant than Pasman’s, but I can assure you, as a practical player, that rook endings do not deserve the name “rook boredom”!)
I know many great rook studies. Pasman’s study is not one of them. It’s boring. Too simple idea and too long solution.
I think middlegame studies will be one of the futures of our genre. As Petr writes, there are plenty of classical themes like Bxh7 to be re-interpreted. The ultimate king hunt (beginning for instance with Kotov’s 30…Qxh3! or as Kasparov Topalov) is still a dream of mine.
An important thing about middlegame studies is that the starting position should have recognizable game-like features like the pawn formations f2-g2-h3, f7-g7-h6 in Sergiy’s study. Another paradoxical thing is that bad economy often makes the study more realistic and more pleasing to me (the pieces on the queenside serve also the purpose of making it look like a game). The number of pieces is less important than how they are positioned. I am not going to use extra material alone for this purpose, of course.
I haven’t studied Sergiy’s study in detail but the mere idea of Rg3-g5 followed by g4 and Qxh6 makes me rather indifferent to the number of pieces needed to show it.
I’ve thought a lot about the self fork Nf5+Nd5. Not so easy 🙂
Middlegame studies are annoying to compose, though. You never know when you are finished. There is always a better setting.
And there are Krug’s and Jasik’s middlegame “studies” around (like 1st hm next to mine) that make the mission of boosting big ideas more difficult. When someone looks into one of these hoping to see something great but instead he is shown a crazy attack, he is dissapointed and won’t waste his time on such studies in the future.
Finally there is a factual discussion here again. It’s good!
Sergiy, your idea Rg5-g4 is incredible! I’m unsure how to judge the entire study. Emotionally, the 2nd special prize from Costeff at the Krug-50 JT triggered more emotions in me. Why? I dont know. Maybe it’s just my subjective feeling. Perhaps your study is an absolute masterpiece and the future. Definitely the most interesting study of the tournament.
Thank you for your opinion on the Timman study. I hadn’t looked at them that closely. I was a little surprised that Timman also makes economic studies. 🙂
Seriy, your search about anticipation is always very thorough. As a judge you have to tremble before you. 🙂
Actually, I had liked a few more studies, but then your research came …
Thanks, Martin. Probably big studies are not our everyday future, but the existence of such ideas widens our horizons.
Sergej, posmotrel tvoj etud i vspomnil Rokirovkina…
I see Didukh, you do not understand nothing in rook endgames. This study is completely different from my study. The only thing we see here is the move Rh1, which is not the idea of my study at all, and it is only one of moves of some secondary line.
