В этом году конкурс ФИДЕ судил Олег Перваков. “Снаряды” ему подавал директор Кубка Юрий Базлов. К сожалению, организаторы не догадались привести список участников в алфавитном порядке, без номеров (как это сделали в трехходовом разделе), чтобы судья не узнал авторов этюдов сразу после публикации предварительного присуждения. Впрочем, вычислить всех призеров Кубка легко даже без подсказок.
1 приз. Отличный этюд для объяснения этюдной композиции. Своей начальной позицией и финалом он демонстрирует близость этюда с идеями из практической игры, разрушает до сих пор живущий в некоторых головах миф, что этюдное творчество ограничивается исключительно эндшпилями с небольшим количеством фигур. Вовлеченность всех фигур в механизм вечного шаха показывает, что красота выражается не только через ходы, она сидит и здравствует в тактических моментах – ферзь связан по диагонали и вертикали, и даже еще глубже – ферзя связывают связанные фигуры. В этом этюде также легко увидеть прихотливость шахматной красоты. Если бы автору не удалось без видимых усилий привести всех участников финала на свои места, красота бы улетучилась. Автор блестяще справился с заданием. Кажется, что особых трудностей и не было, сама схема способствует сделать напрашивающиеся, но нужные ходы. У многих любителей шахмат в голове точно шевельнется мысль-откровение, что им по силам составить такой этюд и с ним выиграть следующий крупный конкурс, ведь для этого, оказывается, не нужны глубокие познания теории, надо лишь придумать яркий замысел! Такой и должна быть реклама! Уже в процессе они узнают про трудности погони за красотой и про Первакова с битой на страже. 🙂2 приз. Пешечная конфета в фигурной обертке. Первые восемь ходов автор кормит нас бумагой, потом Ретькой. Мило, динамично, но пусто. У судьи Первакова слишком часто второй приз получает этюд похвального уровня. Какой-то неизлечимый синдром второго приза.
3 приз. Предусмотрительное блокирование поля – недостаточно мощная идея, чтобы компенсировать безмозглое мочилово в духе худших фильмов Тарантино. Короли стоят, как на похоронах, а пьяная компания беснуется, как на свадьбе. Дурдом.
1 почетный отзыв. В списке авторов не нашел Добреску. Замечательный вечный танец пяти фигур.
If black must immediately capture the promoted piece, it doesn’t matter what that was. It is generally considered to be a very mild dual in studies. It is like it wasn’t even a real promotion but just a pawn sacrifice.
Среди хороших этюдистов я знаю только одного противника любых дуалей: Власенко. Это его право. Кодекс разрешает судьям самостоятельно определять серьезность дуали (сноска 16А). Впервые слышу, что Базлов, Ставриецкий и Гургенидзе не терпят дуалей при превращении пешки. Очень сомневаюсь в этом. Скорее всего, Владимир Кузьмичев плохо знает взгляды своих экспертов.
По третьему почетному отзыву – очень маленькое содержание.

Поэтому, что в данном этюде оценивается на кубке мира, непонятно. Более худшая версия? Или какой-то глубокий смысл надо искать в форсированном мордобое? Формальное добавление феникса – это всего лишь ненужная добавка.
Из того, что мне понравилось это первый почетный отзыв. Реализованная идея заслуживает медального блеска любой величины. Прекрасное произведение, там музыка звучит. Чем вызвано принижение?
Сравнение с другим этюдом некорректно, там один слон, а тут два, это совершенно другой танец и более высокий уровень.
I will now have a more systematic go at the World Cup winners.
1st prize. Despite the spectacular final, I do not like this study. It has a spectacular main line and nothing more. Most importantly, if White does not play Nc2 and Qh5+, he is checkmated immediately.
The aesthetic dimension of studies often benefits from a hidden solution or the choice between different plausible options; none of this is offered here. There are no significant tries in the study, and I find “mutual pins” too thin as a theme. Neither do the manoeuvres have instructive value; the tactical motifs are well known from textbooks. Moreover, the technical pawns on h3 and d4, and the captured pawn on e2, dilute the aesthetic effect.
The purpose of advertizing chess composition is better served by studies like Nielsen’s recent study for SCHACH, 04/2021. Pity he did not submit it to the World Cup, I am sure the judge would have liked it!
2nd prize. In my opinion, the real play starts with 7. …Kc5! The rook is alien to the study, even if the sacrifice is tempting, and the queen on b1 does nothing apart from creating an ugly exchange on a7. (I do not think that the phoenix theme is relevant here.) That said, what follows is certainly interesting, especially the sacrifice 8. Nb5! that prepares the Réti-like manoeuvre Kg7.
(Footnote: the “anti-Réti” comment for Kf7 is out of place. When Black decides to run with the pawn, there is no more need for moves with double purpose. White can (i.e., must) simply promote his pawn in time. Kf7 vs. Kf6 is just a simple choice of squares for the resulting queen endgame, though I agree that it is nice that not taking the pawn is the better move.)
On the negative side, the resulting queen endgame, while technically drawn, features a material constellation that Black would frequently win in practice. Since the pawn is “only” on f5, White can draw in a number of ways by checking the king, but there is no “automatic” drawing plan like in defending a queen endgame with the a- or h-pawn or like in defending R+2p against R+3p. I know that most study composers don’t see this as a problem, but I would prefer that a draw study does not conclude with a theoretically drawn ending where I have to concentrate and find good defensive moves for another 20 moves. Again, this dilutes the aesthetic effect.
All in all, not a bad study, but the introduction is not really coherent with the proper play and I do not find the pointe original enough for prize level.
3rd prize: A miraculous composition, but in the first place, a composition, not unlike some of Gady Costeffs works. First of all, I agree that it is better to start with 3. Nh6! in order to avoid the analytics of the first two moves. The play itself with the kings nailed to their places leaves an artificial taste, although I admit that it is very pleasing that 5. a6!! works and 5. Bxb4 not. Pity that Black has no way to defend against Qf6 mate at the end, though this Gnadenmatt is admittedly a minor problem. For me, a typical special prize study: strange but beautiful and excellent craftsmanship.
Special prize: My preferred study from the tournament. Moving the white passed pawn by one line compared to Vinichenko 1983 makes a huge difference. Instead of a clumsy (and cooked) study we have a logical composition with two obstacles—the e-pawn that needs to be removed and the bishop that needs to be decoyed to the a4-e8 diagonal so that the stalemate avoidance e1R can be countered with Nxc6 (Roman theme). In the logical try 6. Ne1? in move six, with bifurcation in move nine, White manages to remove only one of the obstacles in each line: the pawn in 9. e6 and the diagonal in 9. Kg2, but not both at the same time. This is why the pawn must advance to e6 first. The only thing Black can do is to force White to implement the main plan and to play Ne1+, but then the pawn is far enough advanced to sacrifice itself on the right square.
I would suggest that the author promotes 6. …Bc4 instead of Bd3 to mainline. This is the more natural move, attacking the pawn and bringing the bishop to Black’s preferred diagonal. The variations look almost identical to me. I like that 7. e7 can be countered with 7. …Be6+ and 8. …Kxg2, with immediate checkmate, and after 7. Ne1+ Kxe3 8. Nxc2+ Kd2 White can either try 9. Nd4?, 9. e7 Bb5 10. Nd4?, or 9. e7 Bb5 10. e8Q! Bxe8 11. Nd4. But I don’t think this will change much.
However, I can follow the judge’s concern about originality. True, the content in Didukh’s work is much richer and the introduction is incomparably better (natural play, thematic elements, no captures). Also the bishop checks at the end of the mainline Be8-d7-c6 are appealing. But ultimately, this is a judgment call. For me, this is definitely prize level in spite of the predecessor and I would rank this study over the 1st-3rd prize. But here it really depends on what you value as a judge, and how you interpret originality.
A quick look at the honorable mentions.
The first HM is indeed a very beautiful find (“eternal dance”, as Sergiy put it), but the dead material on both sides of the board dilutes the aesthetic impression. I guess it cannot be done better; at least the position is highly natural. For me, special prize level.
For a winner, I find the architecture too static, ie, too much of a perpetuum mobile: I like when tension is built up and released in the course of a study.
The second HM has pointed play and nice tactical motifs, but I am missing an overarching theme and a convincing finish. Does not inspire me. What is this study really about? Perhaps I need to look better, but…
The third HM shows a spectactular tactical fight with economic use of all the material (each piece has a clear function) and a surprising resolution combining underpromotion and a back-rank skewer. A good study, and a great achievement to create all these fireworks on the empty board, without need for technical pawns that protect the white king! My only concern is the army of pawns on the seventh rank, but here, they are less annoying than in other studies. The forced character of the final is a matter of taste. Nonetheless, this study could have been ranked higher.
The fourth HM shows a skilful late middlegame attack. The preparatory bishop manoeuvre Bc1-a3-c1 provokes c7-c5 and so Black must move the queen to c7 in order to defend against Bh6+ followed by Bg5 (Qb6+!). Then another quiet move and Black is helpless. While this is interesting and also instructive for practical players (look how much time you actually have with your attack!), the motifs are standard and the Bc8 is annoyingly inactive. Honorable mention level looks just right.
The fifth HM is the most technical of all studies at HM level. White, already a piece down, sacrifices his last piece with in order to destroy the coordination between the black rook and bishop and to gain control of the g6 square and to win back the piece later on. Strong thematic try and clean and harmonious introductory play, though the line with 2. …Be6 requires precise conversion from White, and this may mislead solvers. The evaluation of the study depends on how much the blow Nd7+! is appreciated by the judge.
The special HM is centered on the foresight theme. On e3 the Black king defends the rook on f4, on d3 it does not. While it is surprising that this difference will later be important, the lines of the study are quite long and also branch out a lot. Moreover, the implementation of the logical structure by means of a exchanging queens (and rooks…) is a major flaw which destroys the economic character of the study.

Если не заниматься изучением идей системно (проследить их развитие, понять критерии их качества), остается философствовать про экономию и технику бега фигур по доске.
Oleg (and Sergiy), any advice on what I should read on the history of the endgame is more than welcome. Of course, I am studying the works of great composers, but this is not systematic. The problem is that most literature on endgame studies is in Russian and I cannot read it fluently.
That said, if you think I wrote bullshit, or if you think that my evaluation is affected by lack of historical knowledge, you are free to write where this is the case, and why. We are here on the blog to learn from each other. General dismissive comments do not help. 😉
Books won’t help much. Pervakov is not the only Russian who read Russian chess books on composition. Many mediocre composers read them too. It’s the diversity of chess ideas that matters. The more ideas you know, the deeper you understand their virtues, the better expert you become.
You should try to develop your taste for big-scale ideas if you want to make progress. These are often studies with many pieces, captures, or not so fluent solutions as you like.
My attempt to convert the comments about the prize studies into points:
Pervakov: 3.5 – 3 – 3 – 2.5
Sprenger: 2 – 2 – 2.5 – 3
Didukh: 3 – 2 – 1 – X
Nielsen: 3 – 1.5 – 2.5 – 3.5

Нет ссылки, потому что этюд оригинальный. И если бы тебе моча в голову не ударила при виде известного финала, то ты бы понял, сколько оригинальности в синтезе второго препятствия с римской темой.
Тебе всё Виниченко показал, не будь его этюда, хер бы сам нашел. Пургу не гони. Спецприз именно за то, что во-первых, этюд исправил (хотя Вовка на тему пешечной вилки делал), во-вторых, разделил один лс на два.
Это ответ и Кузьмичеву, и тебе, и тем, кто, по твоему мнению, 3,5 вкатил бы. Впрочем, если бы я судил очередной Альбом ФИДЕ, может, и тоже дал 3,5 – чтобы в Альбом попал. Этюд классный, не отрицаю, что и отметил в присуждении.
Тебе не повезло, что я судил, а не Сумбатян или Нильсен, например.

В отношении 1-го почетного и так написал в комментах, но для непонятливых ещё раз отвечу: во-первых, нет пуанты; во -вторых, конь на отшибе, принимающий лишь опосредованное участие в систематике. Я много составил этюдов на систематику, и неучаствующая в движении фигура для меня большой минус. Как в свое время и для великого Каспаряна. И вообще мое первое впечатление: холодное немецко-скандинавское порно!)) Добреску старался как-то приукрасить все-таки. Но имя автора удивило))
А так, хороший этюд!
Заехал на пару дней к Мише Громову. Нашли новую систематику при 6 движущихся фишках! Все работает, ну почти как в 1 почетном Кубка мира, правда, тоже нет пуанты, зато все фишки участвуют в систематике, на обочине никого нет. И… кое-что ещё в итоге. Ищем дальше))

Дидух, может, его надо было на 2 приз? Вы, по-моему, совсем потеряли чувство красоты, не оценив 2 приз.

Финал чужой. Плагиат, ну если только не сам Алиев автор. K тому же имеет аналитические переходы. Решатель не поймет даже где надо останавливаться. Логично что пешку надо выводить из под удара и дальше что!?
Что там красивого в принципе? Жертва коня? Не взятие пешки? Даже для четырех-пяти фигур это банальная банальность. Нет никаких достижений и от этого смотрится просто уныло.
Это Мински ратовал за приз 5 почетному отзыву, а я бы его отправил в похвальные. Идея лучше реализована у Троицкого: жертва c8=N! с последующим подходом короля и неотразимой угрозой ловли легкой фигуры. В 2016 году я публиковал статью про развитие идеи Троицкого.
